Schools, colleges in West Bengal to close for a week as temp hits 40° for 3 days
On Sunday, Kolkata recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 39.2 degrees Celsius and 29.6 degrees celsius, respectively.
The West Bengal government on Sunday announced that all schools, colleges and universities in the state will remain closed for a week from April a17 until further orders in the wake of the prevailing heatwave conditions.
The state has been recording day maximum temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius for the last three days, and the meteorological department has said that the heatwave conditions would continue till April 19.
“Considering the prevailing heatwave situation, the competent authority has decided to close all autonomous/state/central government aided, sponsored, private schools in West Bengal, with effect from April 17, 2023 for one week or until further orders whichever is earlier, except for the schools in hill areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, where the existing academic schedule will continue,” read a notification issued by the West Bengal government on Sunday.
As per the order, teaching and non-teaching staff will also remain on leave as a special case during the period or till the schools reopen.
“The teaching / non-teaching staff of schools shall make suitable arrangements for conducting extra classes after educational institutions re-open to compensate for the loss due to the closure,” the notice read.
Earlier during the day, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also spoke to mediapersons and announced the week-long closure of educational institutions.
“In this heatwave situation, we must take precautionary measures to shield people from heat stroke. I will request people to avoid going out between noon and 4 pm.
Urging private schools and colleges in the state to follow suit, Banerjee said, “It is my appeal to private schools and institutions to follow the government guidelines.”
