Awesome Kolkata metro : Within four months of commencement of services, Kolkata metro is now going to double its number of daily services on Joka -Taratala stretch on its Purple Line.
The route includes six stations: Joka, Thakurpukur, Sakherbazar, Behala Chowrasta, Behala Bazar, and Taratala. The Indian Railways spent $2,477.25 crore to complete the 6.5-kilometer section.Trial runs on the 6.5 kilometre Joka-Taratala portion of the Kolkata Metro have been taking place since mid-September, and it gained necessary Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) certification in November.

The Kolkata Metro Railway’s Purple Line opened a few months ago, however service was extremely limited.
Metro General Manager, P Uday Kumar Reddy, has decided to increase the number of daily services on Purple Line for the benefit of the people of Behala area. The decision comes after studying the footfall pattern as well as carrying out a detailed survey.
However, there will be no commercial services on Saturdays and Sundays on this stretch.

- The “One Train Only System” will allow up to 24 daily services—12 UP + 12 DN—to be performed between Joka and Taratala from Monday through Friday.
- Beginning on May 1, the frequency of metro services on the Joka-Taratala section will be 40 minutes rather than 60 minutes. On the Purple Line, there won’t be any service interruptions around midday.
- The first metro service from Joka will start at 8:55 am, while the final train from Joka will start at 16:20 pm. No service pause will occur on the UP heading from Joka between 12 and 15 hours.
- The first metro service from Taratala will start at 09.20 am, while the final train will start at 16.40 pm. No service interruption will occur on the DN route from Taratala between 12.30 and 15.30.
The “long-cherished” need of office goers and students at various educational institutions would be met, according to Kausik Mitra, CPRO, Metro Railway.
The final section of the line, which will eventually link Esplanade in the centre of the city to the southwest suburbs, is now being constructed.
When finished, the Joka Line will connect to the East-West Metro and the North-South route at Esplanade. Between Sector V station and Sealdah, the East-West route is only partially functioning. There are currently two lines in Kolkata where metro train services are offered: the East-West Line between Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V and the North-South Line between Dakshineswar and Kavi Subhas.
By August of next year, it is anticipated that the whole length of the East-West Metro, which connects Salt Lake City and Howrah, would be operational.
“We have sent several letters to the state transportation department requesting formal approval.” “All parties – the police, KMC, PWD, KMRC, and the Army – have verbally agreed to our proposal, so it should have been issued by now,” an RVNL officer said. “By now, we could have started building the new market, which will be built within 50 metres of the existing one,” he continued.

The East-West Metro’s construction has been substantially delayed due to three mishaps that happened during digging operations at Bowbazar in downtown Kolkata over the past three years.
The subterranean corridor accounts for 10.8 km of the 16.6 km length of the East-West metro between Howrah and Phoolbagan, with the tunnel crossing beneath the Hooghly river, while the rest is elevated.
