Pushpendra Nath Mishra mounts a desi ‘Money Heist’ that starts rambling after promising a cracker of a ‘con’-test between a slimy politician and his desperate victims
About Choona
Choona on Netflix is a heist comedy that offers some puns and also a lot of fun in its own capacity. The show has a lot to offer in the sense that it combines several genres to make one. With an interesting cast, including Jimmy Shergill, Aashim Gulati, Vikram Kochhar, Chandan Roy, Namit Das, Gyanendra Tripathi, Atul Srivastava, Monika Panwar and Niharika Lyra Dutt in key roles, the show is now streaming. We happened to binge it for you to decide whether its worth it or not, and here’s our review.
Choona Web Series Review: Plot
Choona is an exhilarating ride that takes its viewers through a whirlwind of vengeance and chaos. A team of underdogs come together to settle the score against the formidable politician, Shukla Ji (Jimmy Shergill).
What’s happening you ask? It is basically people across walks of life coming together against Shukla-ji. They include a highly skilled, shape-shifting informer – Triloki (Namit Das), a gully ka gunda – Ansari (Aashim Gulati), a demoted police officer – Bankey (Gyanendra Tripathi), a once successful contractor – JP Yadav (Vikram Kochar), and a resourceful mediator, Bishnu (Chandan Roy), who along with an astrologer, form an unusual bond to take down their common enemy – Shukla!
Choona Web Series Review: Critique
Pushpendra Nath Misra’s Choona is a story that has a lot to offer – including astrological insights, espionage, and moments of laughter, all of this, coming together led by a team of misfits. What’s a fun heist if not one that’s completely haphazard and an absolute chaos. Choona is all of that, and a lot more. This is a show that doesn’t need you to use a lot of your brain, and while you watch it away, it is only in the end that everything begins to make sense, and that’s a classic heist show move, isn’t it?
Jimmy Shergill as Shukla Ji is almost a perfect cast and often, reminds you of Raja Awasthi from Tanu Weds Manu, partly because of what’s going on with the looks and partly because, well, we’d rather not say, because spoiler alert! Aashim Gulati is another interesting watch and he has been cast and made to adapt to his role of Ansari just right. His screen presence throughout the show is almost captivating, and we aren’t complaining about it.
Everyone in the cast, including Vikram, veteran actor Atul, Chandna, Namit, among others, add their own layers to the show, and while you often feel that there’s more some of them could’ve done, it is put together well. Arshad Warsi’s narration is also another positive aspect of the show that sort of elevates the watching experience. We’ve obviously had several people do the perfect narration, and his is also one that’ll make it to the list.
The cinematography, with its low-key lighting, adds to the dramatic and serious effect that the makers are trying to bring in, however, I am personally not a huge fan of the same. However, it does make sense given the entire storyline and the vibe.
Some shows, need you to give it the first episode until you get to the groove of it, and this one’s exactly that. While I’d admit that there are bits, briefly in the middle that do get a little slow, but that’s the case with most heists, however, be rest assured that you’ll have your fair share of laughter while at it.
Choona Web Series Review: Verdict
There’s no doubt that the series has been meticulously crafted and has a lot of thrill to it, but there are setbacks when it struggles to keep the viewers hooked, including towards the middle. However, for those who decide to sit through you, rest assured, you’ll have a good laugh by the end of it.
